From NFL cheerleader and primatologist to National Geographic Explorer and host of Expedition Bigfoot, Dr. Mireya Mayor is truly a global adventurer. In this episode, we speak with Mireya about how her own history and heritage as a Cuban American has shaped her world view. She shares with us the importance of her co-discovery of a new species, her mission to help us appreciate global sustainability through environmental experiences and what she’s learned about humanity via her travels. We discuss the intersectionality of wildlife trafficking, poverty and political instability. She’s been called the “female Indiana Jones,” and Mireya shares with us how she balances the celebrity spotlight, her role as a scientist, and what mentorship means to her.

About Dr. Mayor

Dr. Mireya Mayor is a world-renowned primatologist & award winning TV host.
But the former NFL cheerleader, daughter of Cuban immigrants, and mother of six, is not your typical scientist.

Dr. Mayor is known for exploring the most remote regions of the earth in search of elusive, rare and little known animals. Her explorations have led to several scientific discoveries, most notably her co-discovery in Madagascar of the world’s smallest primate, a brand new species to science.

The audacious explorer is a National Science Foundation Fellow, Fulbright Scholar, National Geographic Explorer, and an Emmy Award-nominated wildlife correspondent for the National Geographic Channel.

Dr. Mayor was recently named one of Stony Brook University’s Top 40 Under 40, which recognizes bright, innovative, entrepreneurial-spirited young graduates who have used their degree to pursue their passions, to help others and lead positive change. She was also awarded the prestigious Fulbright “Global Changemaker” Award.

Her memoir, Pink Boots and a Machete, is available in bookstores worldwide.
